Key
Logger is the main program’s feature. It records all keys pressed on the
keyboard and creates a report (log) in a special format displaying date and time
(optional), as well as an application name and keys pressed. Only ASCII
printable symbols are recorded.
Here
is an example of how the log file may look like:

Start-up
Date : 28-Aug-1998, Time : 07:34:32

Reporting on recent keyboard activity. It doesn't always look
Perfectly formatted, but is sure to record every single keystroke and
Key-typed word.

Here is some more text just to give you an idea of how the output log
file really looks like.

To
enable logging keys, please do the following:
-
Activate the KeyLogPro Settings dialog using one of the two
‘hotkey’ combinations (mentioned above);
-
Choose the General page;
-
Check the Enable Logging box.
Use
the Output Directory input box to specify a location for your log file to be
saved to. Use the Browse button, if needed. If you wish to hide log files, check
the Hidden box.
You
can restrict access to the application (namely, to the KeyLog Pro Settings
dialog) by activating the Password feature. To do this, uncheck the Disable
Password box (which is activated by default). To change your password, press the
Change Password button to open the Change Password window. Fill out the input
boxes offered and press OK to confirm or Cancel to discard.
These
are the two available hotkey combinations to activate the KeyLog Pro Settings
dialog. Use the radio buttons to choose one of the following:
-
Left Shift - F12
-
Left Mouse Button - Right Shift.
This
box displays the current application status, which may be:
-
Active; or
-
Stopped.
The
system is capable of recognizing the key-typed URLs and collecting statistics on
them.
The
5 most popular URLs will be included on top of the key log text report as shown
below.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Activity (starting from 10/10/2002 14:30:58);
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The
statistics is collected starting from the moment the previous results (if any)
are dismissed, which is done using the Reset button on the Banned URLs
page of the KeyLogPro Settings dialog. This data is included to each log file.
NOTE:
It is only the key-typed URLs that are tracked by the application.
When
key log file reaches the size of about 2 pages (160 lines), the old file gets
closed and a new one is created.
The
program enables you to save screenshots to be able to track the on-screen
activity of a user or a group of users. The screenshot saving is done in time
intervals set in the Settings. This period may vary from 6 seconds to 30 minutes
and can be adjusted. Screenshots are converted and saved into the JPEG format
files that can be saved both to local computer disks and to network shared
locations/disks (provided the access to such resources is properly configured by
the Admin).
-
Activate the KeyLogPro Settings dialog;
-
Go to the
Screenshots page;
-
Check the
Use Screenshot Functionality box.
You’ll
also be able to make further adjustments to the screenshots logged by editing
the following parameters:
Use
this input to set the time in seconds being the interval between saving
screenshots. The values may vary from 6 seconds to 30 minutes (1800 seconds).
This
input sets the time when the application is idle. The values are limited the
same way as in the Period
section.
The
recommended quality for jpeg images is 65 to 75 % (75 % by default). A lower
value will result in a poorer screenshot quality, while a higher value will
drastically increase the file size making it pretty heavy to deal with.
Use
the Screenshot Directory input box to specify a location for your jpeg format
screenshots to be saved to. Use the Browse button, if needed. If you wish to
store your screenshots hidden, check the Hidden box.
Screenshots
archiver can be invoked to make an archive of a directory with screenshots. As a
result screenshot (or other) directory archived to file having the same name as
a directory.
To
view a desired screenshot, you’ll just need to pick one from the list featured
at the bottom of the Screenshots page and do one of the following:
-
Press the Display button;
-
Double-click it with a mouse;
-
Press Enter.
This
will result in opening the selected screenshot in your default system image
viewer (to be launched in a popup window).
NOTE:
Prior to turning this option ON, the FROM: (e.g. me@mydomain.com)
and TO: (e.g. addressee@somedomain.com)
email addresses must be specified first, so as the email subject (by default, it
is ‘Key log report’).
The
SMTP server settings can be imported from the system settings (if possible) and
recommended to a user. If not, a user will have to provide a valid SMTP server
address himself (e.g. smtp.myemailserver.com).
Emails
will be sent successfully only provided your PC is properly connected to the
Internet.
The
application users will be able to decide when and how often they’d like their
log files to be emailed. For these purposes they’ll need to use the
Periodically every… and On Keyword Alert checkboxes.
The
Periodically every… option regulates the frequency of log file emails offering
an input for a numeric value of minutes or days (to be chosen from the combo-box
to the right) to determine a period between your log file messages.
Also
one may opt for the ‘forced’ email sending type, i.e. upon ‘Keyword alert’ - as soon
as one of the predefined banned keywords or URLs gets typed on the
keyboard.
Each
email will contain a unique PC ID, which is the NetBios Computer Name to be
included in the Log email body so users can distinguish between email senders.
One
or more log files are sent in the plain text format as an attachment.
The
Email option is enabled/disabled using the Enable email functionality checkbox.
The
Alert (or Banned) keywords are words determined by the Admin for:
a)
Compulsory logging of the events where such key-typed words are
encountered;
b)
Triggering the Log Email
feature.
One
may specify a group of up to 50 words to be included in the Banned Keywords list
(described below). As soon as users being monitored type a word that matches any
of the predefined words, the ‘Keyword alert’ event is activated.
To
form your list of alert (banned) keywords, go to the Banned Keywords page of the
KeyLogPro Settings dialog.
Then,

Besides
adding new keywords, users can also edit or remove them by using the Delete and
Edit buttons. To clear the statistic results completely, leaving the added words
untouched, press Reset.
The
system will recognize key-typed words (separated by spaces or other special
symbols) and gather statistics on these words (meaning on up to 50 words added
to the Banned
Keywords list).
